Jolie plays Evelyn Salt who is accused of being a Russian sleeper agent and goes on the run to try to clear her name. Originally written with a male protagonist, with Tom Cruise initially secured for the lead, the script was ultimately rewritten by Brian Helgeland for Jolie. Filming took place on location in Washington, D.C., the New York City area, and Albany, New York, between March and June 2009, with reshoots in January 2010. Action scenes were primarily performed with practical stunts, computer-generated imagery being used mostly for creating digital environments.

Plot and story - Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie) is tortured in a North Korean prison on suspicion of being an American spy. Released as part of a prisoner exchange, she is met by Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) colleague Ted Winter (Liev Schreiber). When she wonders why she has been freed (because it contradicts CIA policy), Winter informs her that the dogged persistence of her husband, arachnologist Michael Krause (August Diehl), forced the agency to act. Two years later, on Salt’s wedding anniversary, a Russian defector named Oleg Vasilyevich Orlov (Daniel Olbrychski) arrives at the CIA. Salt interrogates him, with Winter and CIA counterintelligence officer Peabody (Chiwetel Ejiofor) observing. Orlov tells her about “Day X", a Russian plot to destroy the United States by using Anglophone sleeper agents trained from childhood. Agent “KA-12" will assassinate Russian President Boris Matveyev (Olek Krupa), a reformer who has dedicated himself to improving relations with the United States, at the funeral of the American Vice President. Orlov reveals that KA-12 is named “Evelyn Salt". Salt protests her innocence and insists on calling her husband to warn him, but he does not answer. Peabody decides to detain Salt, but she escapes and enters her apartment. Finding signs that Michael has been kidnapped, she takes her weapons and one of Michael’s spiders. Having travelled to New York City, Salt extracts venom from the spider and dyes her hair to alter her physical appearance. She then heads to the church where the funeral is being held and shoots the Russian president. She is taken into custody. The media reports that the Russian president has died.
